Experiment on Vectors Physics Essay Bugaboo Industrial Engineering Department, College of Engineering Adamson University, Eremite, Manila In this experiment, the students will determine the resultant of different forces using different methods: graphical method; and getting the equilibrate of forces using component method the force table. Each of the three methods has their own way of getting the resultant force but as the experiment progresses, it was observed that the exultant vectors obtained through these methods are merely accurate and values are closely the same to each other. 1. ) Introduction Vector quantities are quantities that deal with magnitude and direction such as force. Vectors are used to determine a resulting direction and magnitude by getting the sum of given vectors. The sum of vectors is called the resultant vector. Graphical method uses a certain scale to determine the equivalent vector based on the drawing. It is a simple and direct way of getting the resultant force but is limited in precision. Component method can obtain the resultant force by getting two directions at right angles to each other and getting their summations using the Pythagorean Theorem. In getting the equilibrate of the given forces, a force table can be used (see Fig. 1. 1). The equilibrate of a set of forces is the single force that must be obtained with the set of forces to maintain in the system in equilibrium. Figure 1. 1 (Force table) These are the objectives of the experiment that is provided for vectors: a. To study vectors and graphical methods for determining the resultant of several forces. . ) To determine the resultant and equilibrate of two and three given forces using the component method. C. ) To determine the equilibrate of the given forces using the force table. 2. ) Theory Application of the component method: R resultant force Fix horizontal component FYI vertical component Computation for % err or: Sits. Value The apparatus needed to accomplish the experiment are force table, weight holders, set of masses, sheets of graphical paper, ruler, pencil and protractor. As observed in the table of experiment results (see Table 4. 2), the resultant force and the equilibrate recorded from the graphical method and in the component method are very similar to each other. This proves that the graphical method can accurately give the close results as to the component method if the process of graphing is proper and correct. As for the comparison of data recorded by the force table and the component method, the results are very close to each other, but not exact. This is because the mass that is converted from the vectors are not exact r equal to the mass applied to the force table. Points of values were disregarded because the set of masses used has limited number of masses only. 5. ) Summary The three methods of determining the resultant force and the equilibrate of variety of given forces are all accurate. However, there is a very little change in the results depending on what method is used. The component method is used as the standard result because it was accurately computed. As observed on the data results between the graphical method and the component method, there was no error obtained. Chances are that errors will be obtained but except if there will be uncertainties on the measurement used that can affect the conversion of forces. As for the results between the force table and the component method, there was a small error obtained. The set of masses that were applied to the force table was not the very exact as of the results of the conversions of dynes to grams and that made a small impact on the resultant and equilibrate. Many countries have banned the cultivation and use of genetically modified cotton as they possess unforeseen threats to the consumers health, environment and the society. Here is the case of HMs failed promise. Their sustainability vision has lost its application as they committed financial, social and environmental sustainability but the reports claim the opposite. GAP Gap, claiming to be the worlds largest specialty retailer, was founded by Doris and Don Fisher in the year 1969 with San Francisco as the base. They include array of brands namely Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Piperlime and Athleta. Gap now operates 3100 stores worldwide. Interestingly GAP has dedicated a separate website for the cause of the Brands social responsibility and ethical practices. The Statements and claims are powerful and brings a positive aura about the brand. Gap states that they believe not only in the basics of ethical business practices but also to embrace a broader, deeper responsibility to people and the planet. The statement states that the brand stands up to care for the stakeholders, society and the environment at large and they make choices which bring no harm to them. They also ensure the GAP customer that every time a Gap product is purchased the consumer acknowledges a Brand which cares about people and planet. But the true depth of these statements becomes questionable when GAP is now caught in the middle of quality of the work environment GAP suppliers are subjecting their workers to. Women Heed Stroke Warnings Better Than Men I read an article from the American Psychological Association Monitor. The article deals with women and the fact that studies show they heed stroke warnings better than men do. A stroke awareness program in central Illinois significantly increased public knowledge of stroke warning signs, but more among women than men, a team of medical researchers found. According to the article, the study’s lead researcher, psychologist Wayne Dornan, PhD, believes the key to women’s better performance can be found in the results of a two-year-old study, which found women fear motor impairments from stroke more than death and men fear death more than any deleterious consequence of stroke. In the more recent study, Dornan and his colleagues evaluated people’s understanding of the risk factors for stroke among residents of the twin cities of Bloomington and Normal in central Illinois before and after they implemented a five-month intensive stroke-awareness campaign. Overall, the number of people who knew at least one stroke warning sign—including weakness or numbness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking or understanding simple statements, and sudden blurred or decreased vision increased from 57 percent to 78 percent. But most of that increase could be accounted for by a rise in women’s awareness 67 percent to 81 percent. Men’s awareness barely increased at all apparently, more than half were unable to name a single stroke warning sign before and after the awareness campaign, the researchers found. The researchers obtained their data by surveying a random sample of more than 1,314 of the 100,000 residents of the twin cities before the campaign and 1,216 residents afterwards. Dornan said in the article that new time-sensitive pharmaceutical treatments for stroke have made it more imperative than ever that people recognize the symptoms of stroke and seek immediate treatment,. And another new study, noted by Doman published in an issue of Stroke suggests that the number of strokes in the United States is dramatically higher than previously estimated: 700,000 annually as opposed to the earlier estimate of 500,000.

Differences in Cultural Conceptions of Intelligence

There are many definitions of intelligence according to both formal and informal theories. Under formal theories, intelligence is associated to adaptation to the environment and the capability to learn. According to experts, there is an intelligence factor, referred to as g, which dictates all adaptive behaviors such as mental, verbal, creative and mechanical abilities. On the other hand, informal theories define intelligence using verbal, practical and social abilities. Conventional measurements of intelligence involve IQ (intelligence quotient) tests.However, different cultures define and measure intelligence differently. Western and Eastern cultures see intelligence in varying perspective according to important factors in each of these two societies (Sternberg et al, 2005). Western culture, such in the United States and most parts of Europe, traditionally defines intelligence as the mental capacity for analytical and reasoning as evidenced by strong performance in practical proble m solving, verbal and social skills.Accordingly, several tests in the United States are used to gauge a person’s intelligence. Examples are the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, the Wechsler Intelligence Scales, Cognitive Abilities Test, and School and College Abilities Tests (Sternberg, 2007). Eastern cultures have an entirely different conventional view of intelligence. In China, for example, intelligence covers righteousness, benevolence, humility, self-knowledge and character as some of the traits that are associated when describing intelligence in addition to cognitive abilities.Furthermore, in Taiwanese Chinese, there are five conceptions regarding intelligence. These are cognitive, interpersonal, intrapersonal, intellectual self-assertion, and self-effacement. With the above differences in the perception of intelligence in two representative cultures such as the Chinese (Eastern) and American (Western), comes equivalent parameters that should be remembered to measure abilities. Each has its own methods for testing linguistic, spatial and interpersonal skills (Sternberg, 2007).For testing linguistic capabilities, it is important to take into account the use of appropriate language medium. The two cultures agree on using their native tongues for assessing intelligence of members of the said cultures. The English language is prevalently used in American schools; on the other hand, Chinese characters are common in schools in China. The use of figures and characters in the latter language gives advantage to Chinese students in their spatial abilities whereas abstract thinking and imagination is inspired in American setting.Therefore, a glaring contrast in tests given to American and Chinese students lies in the presence or degree of creativity and spatial skills tests, respectively. As mentioned above, there is great advantage among Chinese with regards to spatial thinking skills which can be attributed to the use of characters and physical represent ations in their language. On the other hand, emphasis is given on the use of alphanumeric characters in Western culture which partly results in abstract reasoning. This is why there are more tests dealing with creative thinking in Western than in Chinese culture.With regards to interpersonal skills, teamwork and collaboration is highlighted in the Western culture while in Eastern culture, the importance of excelling and being independent in order to provide or be an example to other people takes precedence. In other words the difference lies in the Eastern focus on the self as exemplified in the Taoist tradition unlike the Western’s emphasis on unity. Therefore, Eastern culture test for how best to surpass one’s successes while Western culture evaluate a person’s ability to be productive within a group (Sternberg, 2007).

Introduction The rate of imprisonment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians has dramatically increased since 1992. Statistics went from â€Å"1 in 7 prisoners in 1992 to 1 in 4 in 2012 and to almost 1 in 3 in 2014.† There have been an abundance of proposals, plans and programs established, some of which have failed and some which are still in development, to try decrease the high numbers. The high incarceration rate of Indigenous people in Australia is considered to be a global issue that must be addressed. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prison rates The increased severity in the criminal justice system towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is claimed to be the cause for the increasing incarceration rates. Research shows that the majority of Australian prisons have a high Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, â€Å"since 1989, the imprisonment rates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people has increased 12 times faster than the rate of non Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.† This shows that there has been major overrepresentation of Indigenous people in Australia in prisons.
